Explant Recovery: What to Expect After Breast Implant Removal

You made the decision. The surgery is scheduled, or maybe it is already done. Either way, you are in a strange place. Relieved. Anxious. Wondering what comes next.

Explant surgery is the most effective treatment for breast implant illness. A study of 182 women found that 97% reported symptom improvement after implant removal. But recovery is not always instant, and it is rarely linear. Some women feel better within days. Others spend months detoxing before they notice a shift.

Here is what the research and the BII community say about what actually happens after explant, and how to give your body the best chance at healing.

What Happens to Your Body After Surgery

During explant, your surgeon removes the implants and, in most cases, the scar tissue capsule that formed around them. When the implant and capsule come out together in one piece, it is called an en bloc capsulectomy.
